Two Artists Committed to Exploring Love as Art for Seven Years
San Francisco, California: Concerned with the prevalence of violence, war and moral divisiveness in the world at large, artists Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle decided to offer society an alternative vision. After falling madly and passionately in love they committed to spreading their love through art. On December 18th, 2004 they had an experimental wedding in New York City where they committed to exploring love as art for seven years, and thus became each other’s official art muse and collaborator. Then they set to work on a variety of “Love Art” projects.
The Wedding Project. Stephens and Sprinkle will have seven weddings, one per year. The weddings are performance art events, where the brides and the guests co-create the ceremonies and art. Each year will be based on a chakra and each chakra’s corresponding color will order the couples’ visual sensibilities. The performance artist Linda M. Montano both inspired and invited the Love Artists to use her 7 chakra/7 year project structure. At the end of seven years the accumulated photographs, documentation, ephemera and art objects that the weddings produce will be exhibited.
The Bronze Porn Star/Academic Panty Collection. Bronzed panties worn by porn stars are exhibited with those worn by academics. This work is an homage and a wink to both groups who are in the forefront of creative thought and practice around issues such as sexuality, sexism and identity politics. Both are sexy, powerful and compelling be it in the classroom or on the silver screen.
Other projects include performances such as Cuddle, X-Treme Kiss, and the Bernal Beach Love Diet. New projects are developing at a rapid pace. The artists also give lectures and do performances about their work in the Love Art Laboratory. They also exhibit their visual collaborations in art galleries.
Sprinkle and Stephens will share their progress with the public on their website
www.loveartlab.org. This site is the virtual home of their Love Art Laboratory. It is a site that will unfold and grow as the project’s seven years progress.
