July 20 - 22: Beyond the Binary: a weekend of fabulous workshops and films tackling gender assumptions
On July 20th, 21st, and 22nd the Ad Hoc Coalition of
Radical Gender Activists are facilitating a weekend
long collection of workshops, films and performances
that question and provoke the manifestation of gender.
Our culture’s prevalence of hate crime and gender
biased violence sends the message that freedom of
expression can be deadly and misinformation
surrounding sexual orientation and gender expression
can be fatal. It is our responsibility to combat this
message with one of hope, inclusion, knowledge and
understanding.
“Beyond the Binary” is focused on exploring that
message, and empowering ourselves to challenge our
notions of gender and socialization, and be fancy and
fabulous in the process.
Beyond the Binary Schedule:
Friday, July 20:
6PM: Critical Mass Bike Ride: Theme: F*ck your Gender!
Meet at the Liberty Pole (at the intersection of East
and Main) at 6:00PM on Friday, July 20th, for a
celebration of free gender expression and bicycle
riding!
*Gender fuck* is the lovely practice of purposely
bending, blending, or breaking stereotypical gender
appearances and mannerisms, resulting in a mixture of
non-stereotypical gender identifiers that provoke the
onlooker to question their gender assumptions. Fuck
your gender! Yaaaaaay gender fuck!
**Critical Mass** is a slow-moving, leaderless bicycle
ride that celebrates cycling and cyclists' right to
the road. CM is an event and not an organization.
Rochester Critical Mass has it's monthly ride on the
last Friday of the month, 6PM, at the Liberty Pole in
Downtown. Ride Daily~Celebrate Monthly!
7PM: Deconstructing Gender (a gender 101 workshop):
After the F*ck your Gender Critical Mass, come out for
an evening of deconstructing and challenging societal
assumptions on gender and sexuality. Come view a
dazzling film montage and join an exciting dialogue on
personal experiences with gender roles. With
activities inspired by Kate Bornstein's Gender
Workbook, find out what it means to be "perfectly
gendered" or a gender outlaw.
Location: St. Joe's House of Hospitality, 402 South
Ave.
Saturday, July 21:
2PM: Trans 101 and Beyond:
Curious or confused about transgender persons? Trans
woman, Camille Hopkins guides you through the basics
and more about transgender identities in an
informative workshop and discussion. Learn about
transsexuals, crossdressers, genderqueers, drag
queens/kings, and other gender-variant people. In
