Dear Captain May,

Could you let me know how sure you are of the dates you have given
(August 20 - 24) for the nuclear attack part of Noble Resolve? Every other
mention of this on the net just says "August." I am not asking for you
sources, just if you have a reliable one for the dates. My wife and
son are in Portland and I want to get them out of there in case it
"goes live." Since both have jobs and aren't as concerned about this
as I am, the reliability of the dates for this part of the "exercise"
are crucial to me. Thank you for getting this information out and for
all your efforts on behalf of peace and the republic.

You are right about the lack of specifics given the public about Operation Noble Resolve, and I have been in extensive contact with various government officials to get the information I have been publishing through (among others) my flagship paper, The Lone Star Iconoclast.

My source for the exercise dates of August 20-24 is Lt. Col. Philip Smith, a spokesman for the U.S. Joint Forces Command (JFCOM), which is heading up Noble Resolve. Since he is the only official who could or would specify the dates, I double checked it in follow up conversations with him, and he assures me that the time period is correct. An important note: these are the dates of the exercise, he says, but he did not specify the date of the Portland nuke.

My background as a former Army public affairs officer makes me suspicious of the failure by JFCOM to follow up on its promise to deliver further details to me and the Iconoclast -- and through us to the concerned public. It is certainly out of the ordinary for them to remain silent in the face of growing alarm.

Yesterday, I set up a Yahoo! user group, "Portland Nuclear Inquest," to serve as a communication network for those of us who are doing our civic duty by monitoring the situation in Portland and Oregon.
