Conceptualized by the Lifers Group at Otisville Correctional Facility in 2005, Family Empowerment Day events provide an opportunity for prison family members and supporters to come together to further the work of improving conditions behind and beyond the wall.

This year's Albany event is produced by the Family Empowerment Project of Prison Action Network, the Justice Committee of FUUSA, and Prison Fellowship Ministries

Theme: Educating for Empowerment "The Impact of Incarceration on Families, Congregations, and Communities"

Closing Remarks and Benediction: Rev. Glorya Askew, Ministerial Coordinator for NYS DOCS Ministerial and Family Services.

Keynote Speakers David Soares, Albany County DA and Rev. Peter Young, Volunteer CEO of Peter Young Housing, Industry and Treatment program
will address the gathering and invite discussion about the impact of incarceration on them personally, as members of a faith community, as residents in the Capital District, and as service providers.

Panel Discussion: 5 panel members representing formerly incarcerated persons, family, community, and/or congregation will speak for 5 minutes each, followed by a half hour conversation with our guests.

Added attraction: Participants are invited to stay for a 2:30 PM screening of the rough cut of The Visitors, a documentary that follows family members as they travel from NYC, and points north, to the upstate prisons. The filmmaker, Melis Birder, will be present to hear feedback from the audience.
