This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, Radio Havana Cuba, and the Voice of Russia.
From CHINA- China and the US are celebrating 30 years of relations, with Jimmy Carter visiting the Chinese President. Many experts think that President Obama will deepen cooperation between China and the US. The Chinese government has revealed a support package for their steel and automobile producers. Protests against the Israeli war on Gaza continued, and Palestinian President Abbas called for a ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal. Israel stopped an Iranian ship loaded with humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza. Hamas reportedly agreed to an Egyptian initiative calling for a ceasefire.
From NETHERLANDS- Radio Netherlands has eliminated shortwave broadcasts to North America. The decision is based on their surveys that find very few listeners in N America. First an interview with a Palestinian diplomat in London who emphasizes that the Israeli war is against Palestine, not just Hamas. A former US soldier who was stationed at Guantanamo Bay Prison has teamed up with a released detainee to lecture around England promoting the need to shut down the facility. Latin American observers hope that President Obama will restore relations with southern neighbors, after 8 years of neglect by George Bush.
From CUBA- Thousands of Israelis demonstrated over the weekend to demand the end to their government's assault on Palestine.
From RUSSIA- A commentary on Western reporting on the lack of Russian gas reaching Europe, which Russia blames on Ukraine.
