Horticulturist: Disappearance of Honey Bees, a Warning Sign of Ecological Collapse

Interview with Laura Kelley, organic horticulturist, conducted by Melinda Tuhus

Laura Kelley grew up in a family that lived off the land on Cape Cod. Employing the knowledge gleaned in her early years, Kelley has worked for the past 18 years as a beekeeper, organic landscaper and designer, a nutritionist and naturalist. She owns Littlefield Landscapes in North Eastham, Mass., where the she helps others support an organic lifestyle.

Kelley offered one of 200 workshops at the 36th annual Northeast Organic Farming Conference Aug. 13 through 15 at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She presented a workshop called Edible Landscapes that focused on the symbiotic relationships among humans, animals and plants.

After her workshop, Kelley spoke with Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus about her observations on the disappearance of honey bees, issues of pollution and food production and the philosophy which guides her daily life.
